One of the most regular topics of conversation on The Wave This Week is the NBA. We love all things basketball, but tonight they put the NBA on pause. This time it wasn’t because of COVID-19, it was because of the unjustified shooting of Jacob Blake. He was shot in the back seven times by police. Seven times.
Players all around the Association took notice. The Bucks and the Magic were scheduled to play game five of their first-round playoff series tonight, but the Bucks never took the floor. The league soon reported that it was a way to make a difference and protest from within the NBA bubble. A protest that was decided by the players. Other teams quickly responded and shortly after, all NBA games were postponed. The NBA wasn’t the only team watching. The WNBA postponed all games for the evening as well. In the MLB, the Reds and the Brewers also elected not to play. The world of sports came together to protest inequality in America in the most influential and impactful way that they could, by not playing.
Here at WavyPack, we’re passionate about the culture that ultimately drives the content we post. We feel like that culture is under attack. As a team, we decided not to post a new installment of the podcast. We want to stand in solidarity with these athletes and support their protest because this week, and every other week, the wave is equality. It’s our hope that people will take some time to think about what impact they can have on this ongoing fight for equality.
