Mysterious UK music project Sault has released five brand new albums today in a password-protected folder, which they say will disappear in five days. The artist posted a message on social media early this morning, describing the albums as “an offering to God,” hinting that the password “is in the message”. The folder, which is currently available on Sault’s website, contains a zip file with albums titled 11, AIIR, Earth, Today & Tomorrow, and (Untitled) God.
The Top Hip-Hop and R&B Albums of 2022 (So Far)
Sault emerged in 2019 with two LPs, 5 and 7. The artist followed that up with two politically-charged LPs the following year, Untitled (Black Is) and Untitled (Rise). In 2021, Sault released NINE, an LP available to stream, download, and buy for only 99 days following its release. April 2022 saw the release of Air, an expansive orchestral album unlike any of the prior projects. In October, the artist returned with the ten-minute single “Angel,” which does not appear on the new records. Though they have no official lineup, the group is understood to revolve around producer Inflo. The music is an adventurous yet often spare form of R&B, ranging from simply vocals with bass and drums to fully orchestrated songs.
Of the five new albums, AIIR most closely follows the symphonic style of the April album. Earth mixes contemporary soul with choral elements and African drum polyrhythms. Today & Tomorrow evokes vintage ’70s funk and rock. 11 fittingly adopts similar sprawling R&B sounds as 5, 7, and NINE, while the same can be said for Untitled (God) in its trilogy.
Be sure to check out this amazing effort from Sault before it’s scrubbed from the internet forever.
