Aaron Judge’s Historic Season Ends with AL MVP Honors

Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals takes home the NL award.

On the same day that the Cambridge Dictionary named “homer” the Word of the Year, Aaron Judge was named the 2022 American League Most Valuable Player. The Yankees’ slugger led the league in several offensive categories, including RBIs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, OPS+, and total bases on top of his record-setting 62 home runs.

There was plenty of debate in the second half of the season as to whether Judge’s historic offensive numbers would be enough to top Shohei Ohtani’s impressive play as a pitcher and designated hitter. After all, Ohtani’s numbers this season were better than the unprecedented stats that lead him to MVP honors last year. It came down to WAR – one of the few stats that can marginally compare pitchers to hitters. Judge’s 10.6 WAR as a pure hitter bested Ohtani’s 9.6 WAR as both a hitter and pitcher. To put it simply, Aaron Judge’s offensive numbers were so astronomical that they were worth more than Ohtani’s stats as a two-way player. In the end, it was the Yankee slugger who received 28 of the 30 possible first-place votes. Ohtani finished in second place, followed by Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros in third.

In the National League, Cardinals’ first baseman Paul Goldschmidt also took home his first MVP award. Goldschmidt led the NL in slugging percentage and OPS, while compiling a .317 batting average, 35 home runs, and 115 RBIs. At age 35, the seven-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner adds another piece of hardware to his Hall of Fame-worthy resume. Manny Machado of the Padres and Goldschmidt’s teammate Nolan Arenado finished second and third in the voting, respectively.
