The NBA announced on Tuesday that they will permanently retire Bill Russell’s number to honor the life and legacy of the 11-time NBA champion and civil rights pioneer. Russell’s No. 6 will be retired league-wide to ensure “that Bill’s transcendent career will always be recognized,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver in a statement. Russell passed on July 31 at the age of 88.

NBA Considers Adding New Franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas

Bill Russell becomes the first player to have his number retired across the NBA, deservedly so. Across his 13-season career, Russell transformed the game with graceful athleticism and dominant defense. His trophy case boasts five MVP awards, 12 All-Star selections, as well as 11 All-NBA honors. In a similar fashion, his impact on the game would continue far beyond his playing days.

As the first Black head coach in the history of major U.S. professional sports, Bill Russell guided the Celtics to back-to-back championships in 1968 and ’69. Off the court, Russell was a passionate fighter for equality, respect, and inclusion as he marched for civil rights with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Consequently, President Obama awarded Bill the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his athletic feats and lifelong commitment to social justice.

“This is a momentous honor reserved for one of the greatest champions to ever play the game. Bill’s actions on and off the court throughout the course of his life helped to shape generations of players for the better and for that, we are forever grateful. We are proud to continue the celebration of his life and legacy,” said NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tramglio.

The legendary Hall of Famer joins Jackie Robinson and Wayne Gretzky as the only players to have their numbers retired league-wide in their respective sports. Meanwhile, current NBA players already wearing number six, including LeBron James, may continue to wear the number.

In addition to the jersey retirement, the NBA will pay tribute to the Celtics legend throughout the upcoming season. Jerseys will feature a commemorative patch on the right shoulder, though Boston will have a separate and unique recognition on their uniforms. Additionally, each home court will display a clover-shaped logo with Russell’s No. 6.
