Something about the surprising split between Nike and Kobe Bryant’s estate last year always felt wrong. Following the end of Kobe’s contract last April, his family and Nike couldn’t agree to terms to continue the deal. As a result, no new sneakers were released and the resale market on older models skyrocketed. At long last, that wrong has been righted.

Vanessa Bryant took to Instagram to announce that her family will continue to work with Nike to further Kobe’s legacy and lasting impact on the game of basketball. The rekindled partnership will begin with the release of the Kobe 6 Protro “Mambacita Sweet 16,” honoring Gianna Bryant. Additionally, 100 percent of the proceeds from Gianna Bryant’s Nike products will be donated to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. Vanessa also noted that they will look to establish a basketball center in Southern California that “will share the Mamba Mentality with youth athletes for generations to come.” John Donahoe, President & CEO of Nike, shared a quote in the official press release.
“Kobe Bryant means so much to so many of us, not just NBA fans but globally beyond the game. His impact in growing the sport, particularly encouraging women and young people to pick it up, endures as one of his deepest, lasting legacies. Together with Vanessa, we hope to honor Kobe and Gigi by championing a new generation for many years to come.”
Kobe Bryant initially signed with Nike in 2003 after a seven-year stint with adidas. His two-decade career saw the release of over fifty signature sneakers. Both Nike and Vanessa Bryant expressed immense joy with the opportunity to continue the partnership. Fans will now have access to a plethora of new products dedicated to Kobe and Gigi for years to come.
