There’s a place in our hearts we call home. It’s the place where we feel most gracious to be. For many of us, the duality of home makes the distance ever more present. My father once said, “we’re always away, even when we’re home”. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that’s partially true, that is.. until we return and take in the land’s energy that gave our ancestors so much. Chris Toro creator of the film company MATADOR PICTURES, provides an intimate view of his endearment for his homeland. Each shot serves as a stunning and gracefully honest representation of Puerto Rico (Spanish for ‘Rich Port’). Although shot in this era, the film seems touched by the past with sensational color grading courtesy of Miguel Gallardo and a texture that gives way to the poignant score provided by Camilo Pentzke, which simply echoes the solace of home.

There’s a place for all of us, one where we feel most alive. Chris Toro captures these emotions in full form, showcasing his prowess as an up-in-coming film maker. We discovered his passion for film-making first hand, as Toro expressed to us, how things didn’t quite go exactly as he would’ve thought during the developmental stages of the film. This allowed him time to re-focus and consider a different approach.
“I lost some film during development. Which really sucked, but I was able to use other shots, which in the end turned out to be better. I also changed the music, and I honestly feel like what I have now is much better.”
The film encapsulates the simplicities in which we often take for granted. Those moments, although enjoyed, seem to pass us by. When we look back, we realize just how important they were. For it is true, the best things in life for some exist solely in our memories. Cheers to the artists who help capture these moments in space and time for us and for the next generation.

“PORT OF RICHES” invokes so many emotions, as we can all recall the joys of being home and the sadness of discovering the changes that occurred in our absence. This, paired with Toro’s fine attention to detail and what you get, is a film that will not only capture your heart, but will also hold space in your memories. Where some of the best things live.
