There is no stopping HUNTR/X. After the animated film KPop Demon Hunters became one of the year’s most surprising and dominant cultural phenomena, Netflix and Sony Pictures are officially moving forward with a sequel. The news comes as little surprise, given the record-breaking success of the first film. In just two months, KPop Demon Hunters managed to dethrone the Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds blockbuster Red Notice to become Netflix’s most-watched English-language film of all time. The film also proved to be a box office draw during its limited theatrical run, demonstrating its massive appeal across platforms. This success has fueled talk of turning the property into a major franchise, with potential for a trilogy, TV spin-offs, and even a stage play.

While it is still early in the development process, and there is no word yet on whether co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the sequel, both Netflix and Sony seem eager to continue their successful collaboration. In a recent interview with THR, Netflix’s head of film, Dan Lin, praised the original filmmakers and confirmed the studio’s excitement to move forward.

“We’re excited to explore what could be the next adventure for HUNTR/X,” Lin said. He also emphasized that the studios would be taking a thoughtful and deliberate approach to any follow-ups to protect what made the first film special. “KPDH’s success comes from its original, fresh story, so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retains the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”

While animated films notoriously take a long time to produce, the confirmation that a sequel is already in the works is a fantastic sign for the millions of fans who fell in love with the world of KPop Demon Hunters. The countdown for the next adventure of HUNTR/X has officially begun.
