There is a particular kind of soul music that does not announce itself. It simply arrives, settles in, and makes itself at home before you have had time to think about it. Jalen Ngonda has been making that kind of music for a while now, and his new single Hang It On The Shelf confirms that whatever he has been building toward on his upcoming album is the real thing.

Who Killed Carrie Bradshaw? An Autopsy of a Fallen TV Icon

The track runs two minutes and twenty-five seconds, which is a statement in itself. There is no padding, no extended outro, no moment that outstays its welcome. Ngonda makes his point and steps back, trusting the song to do what a good song does. The analogue production carries the warmth of something made with patience and care, sitting comfortably in the vintage soul tradition without feeling like a museum piece. What lifts it beyond its reference points is the sincerity. This is writing from genuine feeling, and that authenticity comes through in every measure.

Hang It On The Shelf is the latest preview of Doctrine Of Love, due June 5th through Daptone Records, the New York label that has spent two decades proving that soul music made with intention never goes out of style. The American-born, UK-based artist will support the release with a full UK tour this October, culminating in a headline show at O2 Academy Brixton on October 28th. Before that, he joins Olivia Dean for her sold-out run of European arena shows, a pairing that feels entirely right given where both artists currently sit in the conversation around modern soul music.

If Hang It On The Shelf is any indication of what the full record holds, June 5th cannot arrive soon enough.
