Phillips revealed the clever title, along with an image of Phoenix reading the script, in an Instagram post on Tuesday. In medical terms, Folie à Deux refers to an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals. This is exactly what happens to the citizens of Gotham when the Joker ideology is manifested. Additionally, the “Deux” on its own translates to “Two,” indicating the second film. Further details indicate Phillips and Scott Silver finalized the script on May 16th of this year.

Joaquin Phoenix previously won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the 2019 film that received 11 Oscar nominations. It is currently unknown whether co-stars Zazie Beetz, Robert de Niro, or Frances Conroy will play a role in the sequel. However, it is unlikely that characters from the most recent Batman movie, such as Robert Pattinson or Zoe Kravitz, make an appearance in the forthcoming sequel.

We’ll keep you updated with further details on Joker: Folie à Deux as they become available. Lastly, in case you missed it, Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” Awarded Palme d’Or at Cannes.
