On Tuesday, legendary rapper Tupac Shakur’s estate announced a new immersive museum experience Tupac Shakur. Wake Me When I’m Free. The museum will celebrate Tupac’s life’s work as “part art installation, part sensory experience.” The experience will showcase never-before-seen artifacts including music, poetry, wardrobe and other items in various galleries. Handwritten lyrics from classic 2Pac songs including “California Love” and “Dear Momma” are among the featured relics.

Tupac Shakur was one of the most prolific figures in hip-hop before his untimely passing in 1996 at age 25. Wake Me When I’m Free is made possible by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Chief Curator Nwaka Onwusa, director Jeremy Hodges, and Project Art Collective. The 20,000 square foot exhibit will delve deep into the transcendence of 2Pac’s music, activism, and revolutionary art. His extraordinary contributions to music, art, and sociology will be on full display in this one-of-a-kind experience. Hodges delivered a statement alongside the announcement.
“Tupac Shakur was my Malcolm; he was my Martin, and to build an experience that honors such a prolific man, cannot be summed up in words. We wanted to create a memorable experience that will inspire you to be better than when you walked in. All while leaving you with the knowledge that he was a true revolutionary spirit.”
One gallery will be dedicated to Tupac’s late mother, Afeni Shakur, who passed in 2016. Shakur’s mother – a former Black Panther who inspired the work of her son – is said to be the “guiding light” of the exhibition. The exhibit is likely to spend several months in Los Angeles with hopes of touring other cities in the U.S.
